Chantal Biya is the First Lady of Cameroon, a position she has held since marrying President Paul Biya in 1994. She was born Chantal Pulchérie Vigouroux on December 4, 1970, in Dimako, East Province, Cameroon. Her father, Georges Vigouroux, was a French expatriate, and her mother, Rosette Ndongo Mengolo, was a former beauty queen who later became a mayor.

She married Paul Biya on April 23, 1994, becoming the third First Lady of Cameroon. She is 36 years his junior. She has two children with President Biya, Paul Jr. and Brenda. She also has twin sons from a previous marriage.

Fondly called Chantou, Chantal Biya is widely known for her elaborate hairstyles, particularly her signature “banane” or bouffant wig, and her high-end, colorful designer wardrobe. Her style is often referred to as “the Chantal Biya”.

Paul Biya, born on February 13, 1933, is a Cameroonian politician who has served as the President of Cameroon since 1982. He is one of the longest-serving heads of state in the world and ran for an eighth term in the presidential election in October 2025. 

Born Paul Barthélemy Biya’a bi Mvondo in Mvomeka’a, French Cameroon (now in the South Region of Cameroon), Biya is of the Beti ethnic group.

He attended seminary schools in Cameroon before pursuing his higher education in France. In France, he studied at Lycée Louis-le-Grand and the University of Paris Sorbonne, earning a higher education diploma in public law from the Institut des hautes études d’Outre-Mer in 1961.

Upon his return to Cameroon, Biya began a rapid ascent within the government under President Ahmadou Ahidjo. From 1968 to 1975, he served as Secretary-General of the Presidency. In 1975, he became Prime Minister.

When Ahidjo unexpectedly resigned in November 1982, Biya, as the constitutional successor, was sworn in as president on November 6, 1982.

He married Jeanne-Irène Atyam in the early 1960s. She died in 1992. In 1994, he married Chantal Vigouroux, who is 36 years his junior. He has three children (Brenda, Junior), including his eldest son, Franck Biya.

Paul Biya’s Fortune: In 2009, ForeignPolicy.com estimated Paul Biya’s net worth at $200 million. However, some social media users have questioned this figure, with one commenter noting a much higher $500 million.

The OCCRP investigation conservatively estimated the hotel bill for one of Biya’s stays at the InterContinental at around $40,000 per day, based on room prices and entourage lists. This would amount to approximately $65 million for the 1,645 days of private trips documented by the OCCRP at that time, not including food, entertainment, or travel costs.

A 2009 BBC report detailed allegations that Biya and his delegation spent $40,000 per day on hotel rooms during a holiday in La Baule, southern France. At the time, Cameroon’s communications minister defended the president’s spending.

The OCCRP investigation also reported that flight costs alone for Biya’s private trips could total more than $117 million, bringing the total estimated travel costs to a very high figure.

Anastasia Brenda Biya Eyenga, born on July 29, 1997, is the daughter of Cameroonian President Paul Biya and First Lady Chantal Biya. Known by her stage name “King Nasty,” she is an activist, rapper, and entrepreneur, who has garnered significant public attention for her social media presence and frequent controversies. 

Born at the Unity Palace in Yaounde, Brenda Biya attended the Les Coccinelles nursery and primary schools, created for the children of presidential staff.

She later studied at the prestigious Collège du Léman in Switzerland and at Harvard University, where she reportedly studied physiotherapy.

Her admission to the National School of Administration and Magistracy (ENAM) in Cameroon in 2017 caused controversy, with critics suggesting it was due to favoritism.

Music and Business

Using the stage name King Nasty, Brenda Biya launched a music career as a rapper. She also started an online store, Bree Culture Inc Shopping, which sells wigs and hair extensions.

She is an active user of social media, where her posts and opinions often stir controversy and are widely reported by the media. In September 2025, from her room at the Intercontinental Hotel in Geneva, costing €3200 (2.1 million francs CFA) a night in a viral video on TikTok, Biya called on Cameroonians not to vote for her father in the upcoming presidential election, accusing him of causing suffering to the country and their family. She later retracted her statement, apologized, and praised her father as an “excellent candidate,” claiming she was not knowledgeable about politics.

In July 2024, Biya publicly came out as a l€sbian on Instagram by posting a photo kissing Brazilian model Layyons Valença. This created a major stir, given that same-s€x relations are illegal in Cameroon and punishable with up to five years in prison.

Brenda Biya has been open about her struggles with health issues, including Graves’ disease and thyroid problems, which she believes have contributed to her mood swings.

Her high-profile lifestyle and lavish spending, especially during her time abroad, have drawn criticism from many Cameroonians, given the high poverty rates in the country.

In October 2020, she was targeted by activists from the Anti-Sardinard Brigade (a group fighting against her father’s regime) at a luxury hotel in Paris, who demanded her eviction. Biya left the hotel the next day.

In May 2025, Biya was found guilty of defamation in Geneva after insulting singer Dencia on social media. The trial also revealed that Biya had been living for extended periods at a luxury hotel in Geneva.

Franck Emmanuel Olivier Biya, born on August 21, 1971, in Yaoundé, is a Cameroonian businessman and entrepreneur. He is the eldest son of President Paul Biya.

Childhood and Education: Franck Biya grew up in a privileged environment, surrounded by the influence and prestige of his father. He studied in Cameroon before pursuing higher education at the University of Southern California (USC), where he obtained a degree in political science and economics.

Following his graduation, Biya interned at the Bank of Central African States from 1995 to 1997. From 1997 to 2004, he was a partner in a forestry conglomerate named I.N.G.F., which was later liquidated.

In 2004, he founded Venture Capital PLC, a private fund focused on investing in foreign corporations in Africa and other continents.
