Forbes’ 2025 billionaire list now includes three Black women, a modest but important representation shift. Together they hold $5.4 billion, far behind the $91 billion of 20 Black male billionaires. Oprah Winfrey leads with $3 billion, followed by Rihanna and Sheila Johnson, representing success in media, fashion, and hospitality. Beyond wealth, they’re transformative industry leaders.

Their stories transcend financial success, marking a cultural shift as they break barriers in traditionally exclusive sectors. Their growing influence creates paths for future black women to dream bigger and achieve more.

Beyond their financial prowess, these trailblazing women are transforming the very fabric of industries—revolutionizing everything from media empires and fashion houses to cosmetic powerhouses and frontiers yet unnamed.

1. Oprah Winfrey

Net Worth: $3.2 Billion

Source of Wealth: TV Show, Media (Self Made)

With a net worth estimated at $3.2 billion, Oprah Winfrey remains the world’s richest Black woman, according to Forbes. Her wealth comes from her media empire, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, which ran for 25 years, her cable network OWN, movie productions, and strategic investments. Winfrey launched OWN in 2011, selling most of her stake to Warner Bros. Discovery in 2020. Her investments extend to real estate, including California properties and 2,100+ acres in Hawaii. Her Hawaiian estate showcases her conservation commitment, as she plans to preserve the land, plant native species, and restore the watershed for future generations.

At 71, she continues to expand her influence with recent investments in luxury skincare and a robust real estate portfolio.

2. Sheila Johnson

Net Worth: 1.1 Billion

Source of Wealth: Cable TV, Hotels (Self Made)

Rejoining the list in 2025 with a $1 billion net worth, Sheila Johnson was the first Black woman to become a billionaire. After selling BET to Viacom, she built a luxury hospitality empire, the Salamander Collection, and also owns stakes in professional sports teams like the WNBA’s Washington Mystics.

Sheila Johnson made history as the first Black female billionaire by co-founding BET in 1979 with then-husband Robert Johnson. After selling to Viacom for $3 billion in 2001 and divorcing, she built a new empire spanning hospitality, real estate, and sports. Her Salamander Collection expanded with luxury resorts across multiple locations, while she maintains stakes in professional sports teams including the Washington Mystics and Wizards. In 2024, Salamander partnered with Aspen Meadows Resort, strengthening its luxury position. Though she recently sold the Market Salamander building in Middleburg for $2.23 million, Johnson retained the brand’s intellectual property, strategically evolving her portfolio amid industry changes.

3. Rihanna

Net Worth: $1 Billion

Source of Wealth: Music, Cosmetics, Fashion (Self Made)

The Barbadian entertainer and entrepreneur has an estimated net worth of $1.4 billion. She primarily built her fortune through her cosmetics company, Fenty Beauty, and her lingerie line, Savage X Fenty. Rihanna became America’s youngest self-made female billionaire in 2022 and continues to be a powerhouse in both music and business.

From chart-topping hits to billion-dollar empires, Rihanna’s business transformation has been nothing short of spectacular. With Fenty Beauty (co-owned with luxury giant LVMH) raking in over $550 million by 2020, and her Savage X Fenty lingerie line hitting the coveted $1 billion valuation mark in 2021, she’s proven her golden touch extends far beyond music.

Did you know she also has her fingers in the streaming world through Tidal, manages her own trademark holding company, and owns luxury real estate from Manhattan to London worth over $22 million combined? In 2024, she’s conquering yet another industry with Fenty Hair, perfectly timed as the hair care market is set to explode by nearly $20 billion. And just when you thought she couldn’t do more, 2023 saw her triumphant return to Puma with the Avanti sneaker line—blending her fashion instincts with athletic heritage in a way only Rihanna can. It’s this remarkable ability to reinvent herself while building multiple successful ventures that has propelled her into the rarified air of the world’s wealthiest women.

4. Isabel dos Santos

Net Worth: $2 Billion

Source of Wealth: Music, Cosmetics, Fashion (Self Made)

The daughter of Angola’s former president, Isabel dos Santos, once celebrated as Africa’s first female billionaire. Her assets have been frozen amid corruption allegations, affecting her net worth, but she remains a significant figure in business.

Forbes dropped dos Santos from its billionaire list in 2021, citing difficulty verifying her net worth due to frozen assets that once totaled over $2 billion.

5. Folorunsho Alakija

Net Worth: $1 Billion

Source of Wealth: Oil (Self Made)

This Nigerian businesswoman, involved in oil and fashion, is one of Africa’s most prominent entrepreneurs. Her billionaire status has fluctuated, but she remains one of the continent’s wealthiest women.

Billionaire Folorunsho Alakija co-founded Famfa Oil, holding a major stake in Nigeria’s Agbami oil field. Her Dayspring Property Development owns Lagos’ $145 million Famfa Tower, marking her expansion into premium real estate.

Worth an estimated $1 billion, Folorunsho Alakija exemplifies entrepreneurial excellence and philanthropy. As executive vice-chairman of Famfa Oil Limited and Group Managing Director of The Rose of Sharon Group, her legacy extends beyond business to empowerment and social change. Her Rose of Sharon Foundation has aided 3,500+ widows, granted 9,000 scholarships, and supported healthcare, demonstrating her dedication to social change.
