Ilano-biography

Langelihle “Ilano” Gumede, popularly known simply as Ilano or Ilanó Sky, is a South African makeup artist, hairstylist, content creator and television personality from Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal. She became widely known in 2026 after appearing on Big Brother Mzansi Season 6, also known as Bazozwa.

At 23, Ilano made history as the first openly transg€nder housemate in the history of Big Brother Mzansi. Her time on the show brought attention not only to her colourful personality and beauty skills, but also to transg€nder representation on South African television.

Early Life

Langelihle Gumede was born in 2003 in Durban, South Africa and comes from Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal. She grew up with a twin brother, and the two attended the same school. Ilano has spoken openly about their relationship while growing up and some of the difficulties they experienced during their school years.

Ilano has also shared stories about her childhood and how her family treated her. She said that her family dressed and raised her as a girl from a young age, something she remembers as a natural part of her childhood.

As she grew older, Ilano became more open about her identity and eventually embraced life as a transg€nder woman. Her journey has become an important part of her story, but she has also made it clear that she wants people to see her as a whole person rather than defining her only by her gender identity.

Makeup and Hair Career

Ilano developed an interest in makeup and hairstyling while she was still young. She began learning her craft around Grade 8 and gradually turned her passion into a career.

She became particularly known for makeup, hairstyling and wig installations. Her skills eventually helped her build a following online, where she could showcase her looks and creative work.

Before entering Big Brother Mzansi, Ilano also had experience in customer service, which she believed would help her deal with different personalities inside the house. She described connecting with people and respecting others as some of her strengths.

Ilano as a Content Creator

Social media played an important role in Ilano’s rise to public attention.

She developed a strong online following through beauty, lifestyle and personality-driven content. Her confidence and willingness to express herself helped her attract an audience well before Big Brother Mzansi.

She is also known for using humour and her personality when dealing with negative comments about her identity. Her friend and fellow transg€nder activist Yaya Mavundla has described Ilano as courageous, bubbly and someone who is not afraid to stand up for herself.

Big Brother Mzansi

In January 2026, Ilano entered the Big Brother Mzansi Season 6 house as one of the Bazozwa contestants.

She was introduced as a 23-year-old makeup artist and hairstylist from Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal. She told viewers that her ability to connect with people, her resilience and her respect for others would help her succeed in the competition.

Ilano described herself as someone who brings personality, energy and glamour. She also said that gifts are an important part of her love language and that she enjoys being complimented and treated well.

Making History

Ilano’s arrival in the Big Brother Mzansi house was historic.

She became the first openly transg€nder contestant in the show’s history, making her participation significant beyond the usual reality-TV competition. Her presence gave viewers an opportunity to see a tran$g€nder South African woman represented on one of the country’s biggest reality shows.

For Ilano, representation was one of the reasons she wanted to be on the show. She explained that she wanted people to understand that transg€nder people exist and deserve to be seen and understood.

Life in the Big Brother House

Ilano quickly became one of the more recognisable personalities in the house. Her bold fashion choices, hairstyles and glamorous looks made her stand out.

She also became something of the house’s beauty expert. She regularly helped fellow housemates with their hair and makeup, particularly before live shows and special events.

Her personality was equally noticeable. Ilano was confident, outspoken and energetic, while also showing a softer side when discussing her personal experiences.

Challenges and Controversy

Ilano’s time in the house was not completely smooth.

She became the subject of controversy after some fellow housemates made tran$phobic comments about her. The remarks caused a strong reaction from viewers and led to disciplinary action against housemates involved. The incident also sparked wider discussions about respect, inclusion and tran$g€nder representation on reality television.

Despite the difficulties, Ilano continued participating in the competition and remained open about who she was.

She later stressed that her sexuality and gender identity are not her entire personality. For her, being tran$g€nder is one part of who she is, but she also wants to be recognized for her talent, personality, creativity and ambitions.

Eviction From Big Brother Mzansi

Ilano’s Big Brother Mzansi journey came to an end in March 2026.

She was evicted after surviving several nomination rounds and became the 11th housemate to leave the competition, with her departure confirming the season’s Top 10.

Although she did not reach the finale, her time on the show made a lasting impression. She left with a much larger audience and had successfully used the platform to showcase her makeup, hairstyling, fashion and personality.

Life After Big Brother

After leaving the house, Ilano made it clear that her ambitions extended beyond reality television.

She has expressed interest in acting and continuing to build her personal brand, including her Gadlaza brand. She also wants to use the exposure from Big Brother to create more opportunities in entertainment and beauty.

Her Big Brother appearance gave her an opportunity to move from being primarily known through social media to becoming a recognisable television personality.

Ilano Personal Life

Ilano has been relatively open about her personal journey, particularly her experiences growing up as a tran$g€nder woman.

She has spoken about her family, her twin brother, her transition and the challenges of being transg€nder in South Africa. Rather than hiding those experiences, she has used them to encourage conversations about identity and acceptance.

At the same time, Ilano has repeatedly shown that she does not want her entire public identity to revolve around being tran$g€nder. Her beauty work, fashion, humour, creativity and personality are equally important parts of who she is.
