Elijah Kitaka

Elijah Kitaka is a Ugandan singer, songwriter, drummer, music producer, and multi-instrumentalist known for his unique sound and creative approach to music. He blends Afro-soul, R&B, Afro-fusion, reggae, and dancehall to create songs that feel fresh while remaining connected to African musical traditions.

Before becoming a recognized solo artist, Kitaka spent years performing as a drummer for other musicians. His transition from playing instruments behind the scenes to becoming a lead vocalist has made him one of the interesting names in Uganda’s modern music scene. He is signed to Swangz Avenue, a well-known Ugandan record label.

Early Life and Education

Born on March 30, Kitaka grew up in a musical family in Uganda. His father played bass guitar, while his mother sang in a church choir. With musical instruments around the house and family members involved in music, he developed an interest in performing from an early age.

He began playing drums in church when he was about seven years old. As he grew older, he continued developing his skills through school choirs, live performances, and opportunities to work with other musicians.

Kitaka attended White Angels Primary School, St Lawrence Paris Palais, Namilyango Senior Secondary School, and Kisubi High School. He also studied software engineering and multimedia at Aptech Institute.

Although he explored other interests, music remained an important part of his life. His early experience with drums eventually gave him a strong understanding of rhythm, timing, and live performance.

Elijah Kitaka’s Music Career

Before launching his solo career, Kitaka worked as a professional session drummer and performed with several established Ugandan musicians. His experience included working with artists such as Maurice Kirya, Kaz Kasozi, and Limit X. These opportunities helped him understand different musical styles and the demands of performing on stage.

In March 2020, he released Son of Kalooli, an early project that marked an important step in his journey as a recording artist. However, his wider breakthrough as a solo musician came in 2023, when Swangz Avenue officially signed him as its first male artist.

His debut single under the label, “Nothing,” introduced more listeners to his vocal style. Later that year, he released the seven-track EP Bedroom Essentials, featuring songs such as “Ndi Wuwo” and “Contagious.”

“Ndi Wuwo,” whose title translates roughly to “I’m yours,” helped him gain attention among Ugandan music fans. His later releases, including “Dawa,” “Ekyange,” and “Daily Bundle,” further strengthened his profile.

One thing that makes Kitaka stand out is his willingness to experiment. Rather than sticking to one genre, he combines different influences and writes songs inspired by personal experiences, relationships, and everyday life.
