Official Starter

Official Starter, whose real name is Ernest Raja Nettey, is a Ghanaian dancer and social media content creator who became popular for his entertaining dance videos featuring women working at Makola Market in Accra, Ghana. His content combines music, humour and everyday market life, creating a refreshing style that has attracted viewers from Ghana and beyond.

Unlike creators who rely mainly on professional dancers, Official Starter found a way to turn ordinary market women into internet sensations. His work celebrates their energy and personalities while showing how social media can introduce everyday people to a much wider audience.

Early Life and Background

Although Official Starter has become a recognisable face in Ghana’s online entertainment scene, detailed public information about his childhood, date of birth, family background and education remains limited. He is best known publicly for his dance content and the creative idea that helped him build his audience.

Rather than depending on a traditional entertainment career, he has used social media as a platform to showcase his creativity. His story reflects the opportunities available to people who can develop an original concept and connect with audiences through short-form videos.

Career and Rise to Fame

Official Starter rose to prominence through videos in which he dances with market women, particularly traders associated with Makola Market. Their lively routines and natural reactions helped the clips attract attention online.

A major moment came in 2023 when the women participated in the viral #CityBoy challenge, connected to Nigerian music star Burna Boy. The videos attracted wider attention, and Burna Boy publicly acknowledged the group’s participation. The attention helped introduce the market women to a much larger audience.

Official Starter also used the growing popularity of the group to create memorable experiences for the women. In October 2023, he took them on a safari outing, where they enjoyed seeing wildlife and trying new activities. Reports also highlighted their excitement about travelling by aeroplane for the first time. These experiences added a personal and uplifting dimension to his online work.

In March 2024, Official Starter explained that he pays the women who participate in his videos. He said the shoots can take considerably longer because the women are not professional dancers and must leave their businesses to take part. His approach recognises their time and contribution to the content’s success.

He has also attracted attention for community-minded activities, including efforts to raise funds for the women and sharing food items with people in need.
