Singer
Sha Sha
Sha Sha, whose real name is Charmaine Shamiso Mapimbiro, is a Zimbabwean-born singer and songwriter who has become one of the recognisable female voices in South Africa’s amapiano music scene. Often called the “Queen of Amapiano,” she is known for her smooth vocals, emotional delivery, and ability to turn dance tracks into memorable songs.
Her journey from singing in school and church choirs in Zimbabwe to winning an international music award is a story of talent, patience, and taking a chance on a dream.
Early Life and Background
Sha Sha was born on 13 July 1994 in Mutare, Zimbabwe. During her childhood, she moved between different parts of Zimbabwe and spent time with relatives as her family circumstances changed.
Music became part of her life at an early age. She sang in choirs and took vocal and piano lessons, gradually discovering that singing was more than just a hobby. Her musical influences included Zimbabwean legends Oliver Mtukudzi and Thomas Mapfumo, alongside international singers such as Adele and Sia.
Interestingly, music was not originally her main career plan. Sha Sha once hoped to become a nurse, reflecting her family’s emphasis on education and professional careers. However, as her confidence grew and more people recognised her voice, she began to take music seriously.
How Sha Sha Started Her Music Career
Sha Sha began pursuing music professionally in the early 2010s. Her early recordings received radio airplay in Zimbabwe, helping her attract attention from established musicians.
One of the people who recognised her potential was Zimbabwean singer and songwriter Audius Mtawarira, who became an important mentor in her development.
She later travelled to South Africa to explore more opportunities in the music industry. The move was not an overnight success story. She performed at events and continued working to establish herself before meeting producers and artists who would help change her career.
A significant connection came through DJ Maphorisa, who recognised the quality of her voice and introduced her to the amapiano sound. She subsequently worked with leading South African musicians, including Kabza De Small, Mlindo the Vocalist, and Samthing Soweto.
Breakthrough Songs and Albums
Sha Sha’s breakthrough came through collaborations that introduced her voice to a much wider audience. Songs such as “Akulaleki,” “Tender Love,” “Love You Tonight,” and “We’Mama” helped establish her as a sought-after vocalist.
In 2019, she released her debut EP, Blossom. The project showcased her ability to combine soulful singing with amapiano rhythms and became an important milestone in her career.
Her sound helped demonstrate that amapiano could be both energetic and emotional. Rather than relying only on catchy beats, she brought warmth and personality to the music.
Awards and Major Achievements
One of Sha Sha’s biggest career moments came in 2020, when she won the BET Award for Best New International Act. She became the first Zimbabwean artist to win the award, bringing considerable attention to Zimbabwe’s music industry.
The achievement also strengthened her international profile and highlighted the growing global influence of African music.
In 2022, she released her debut studio album, I’m Alive, further developing her identity as a solo artist and showcasing her musical growth.
