Nitefreak

Nitefreak, whose real name is Bhekinkosi Melusi Mabhena, is a Zimbabwean DJ, music producer, and remixer known for his unique approach to Afro House and Afro-progressive music. Born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, he has built an international reputation by combining African rhythms with electronic dance music.

His journey from producing beats for local musicians to performing at international music events is an inspiring example of how creativity, patience, and consistency can turn a passion into a career. Today, Nitefreak is recognised as one of Zimbabwe’s notable exports in electronic music.

Early Life and Musical Background

Nitefreak grew up in Barbourfields, Bulawayo, where music was an important part of his environment. His father worked as a music lecturer, which exposed him to instruments, musical theory, and different sounds from an early age.

Before fully committing to music, Nitefreak was interested in football and played for his high school team. He later had an opportunity to join the Highlanders Academy, but eventually decided that football was not the right long-term path for him.

He also studied mechanical engineering at Bulawayo Polytechnic while developing his music production skills. His background shows that his career did not happen overnight; he explored different interests before deciding to focus on music.

How Nitefreak Started His Music Career

Nitefreak began his journey as a self-taught DJ and producer in 2009. He learned music production using FL Studio and gradually improved his skills by experimenting with sounds and learning from other producers.

In his early years, he produced beats for local Zimbabwean artists, including Cal Vin and GTI. His first single, Enough, featuring SoulChard, came out in 2014. The release encouraged him to take his own artist identity more seriously.

In 2016, he created a house remake of Cal Vin’s song Bebengakholwa. The project helped him discover a clearer direction for his sound. He followed it with Woza Kimi in 2017, featuring Kemm Vocals, and Love Ye Mali with Mj Sings in 2018.

Another important breakthrough came with Ghost, a collaboration with South African producer and DJ Vestaa. The track attracted support from established house music DJs, including Black Coffee and Shimza, helping Nitefreak reach listeners beyond Zimbabwe.

International Breakthrough and Popular Songs

Nitefreak’s international breakthrough grew significantly through his collaboration with Francis Mercier and the Ivorian group Magic System on the remix of “Premier Gaou.” Released in 2021, the track introduced his Afro House sound to a wider global audience and became a major milestone in his career. The remix was later certified gold in France.

His other releases include “Kamili,” “Hinde,” “My Africa,” “Ike Onu,” and “Gorah.” His music has received support from international artists such as Diplo, Black Coffee, and Pete Tong. He has also collaborated with artists including BLOND and Amadou & Mariam.

Afroholic Records and Business Ventures

In 2025, Nitefreak launched Afroholic Records, his own record label, with the goal of creating more opportunities for Afro House music and supporting talented producers. One of its early releases was “Masterclass,” a collaboration with veteran house vocalist Roland Clark.

He also created Hinde, an event brand that began as a way to provide opportunities for Afro House performers in Zimbabwe. The concept grew beyond the country, with events reaching international music destinations.

These projects show that Nitefreak is interested in more than performing and producing tracks. He is also building platforms that can help other artists gain recognition and develop their careers.
