Jurenzo Julius

Jurenzo Julius is a Namibian-born professional rugby union player who has made a name for himself in South African rugby. Nicknamed “The Boogie Man,” he is known for his powerful running, impressive speed, strong ball-carrying ability, and confidence when taking on opposing defenders.

Born on May 11, 2004, in Namibia, Julius moved to South Africa during his teenage years to pursue better opportunities in rugby. His rapid rise from schoolboy rugby to the professional game has made him one of the exciting young talents to watch in the sport.

Early Life and Family Background

Jurenzo Julius was born into a family with a strong connection to rugby. His father and uncles played the sport, and their influence helped shape his interest from an early age.

Growing up, Julius spent plenty of time playing rugby and developing his athletic abilities. He also participated in tennis, athletics, and gymnastics, which helped him develop coordination, speed, and physical confidence.

His talent soon became difficult to overlook. At around 14 years old, he left home to attend Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The move was an important decision because it gave him access to a competitive school rugby environment and opportunities to develop his skills.

Leaving home at a young age was a significant step, but Julius remained focused on his goal of becoming a professional rugby player.

Rugby Career and Rise to Fame

Julius’s performances at Paul Roos Gymnasium helped establish him as a promising young player. His strength, attacking instincts, and ability to break through defensive lines attracted attention from professional rugby scouts.

In 2022, he joined the Natal Sharks development system. He continued improving through the youth ranks before making his senior debut for the Natal Sharks in the Currie Cup in July 2024.

He made an immediate impression by scoring two tries against the Golden Lions, helping his team secure a 35–22 victory.

Later in 2024, Julius made his debut for the Sharks senior team in the United Rugby Championship against Connacht. His performances showed that he could compete at a higher level despite his young age.

Julius also represented South Africa at under-20 level, earning 13 appearances and scoring seven tries across the 2023 and 2024 seasons. His impressive performances earned him the Junior Springbok Player of the Year award in 2024.

In 2025, he was invited to a Springbok alignment camp, an important opportunity to learn from South Africa’s senior national-team coaches and players.

Why Is He Called The Boogie Man?

Julius earned the nickname “The Boogie Man” during his school years. His size, speed, and ability to evade or overpower defenders made him a difficult opponent to stop.

The nickname became part of his identity on the rugby field and reflects the exciting, attacking style that has helped him attract attention.

Playing Position and Style

Julius primarily plays as a centre, particularly outside centre, although he can also feature on the wing. He combines physical strength with quick footwork and an ability to find space in defensive lines.

He has spoken about his appreciation for attacking rugby and admires players such as Ma’a Nonu, who combine power, speed, and technical skill.
