Chokoma

Chokoma, whose real name is Katlholo Hiri, is a Botswana musician known for his distinctive Afro Culture sound and songs performed in Shekgalagari. Also known by the nickname Chakacha, he is passionate about celebrating Botswana’s cultural identity through music. His journey shows how artists can embrace their mother tongue while reaching audiences beyond their local communities.

Early Life and Background

Chokoma was born on May 16 in Kalkfontein, in the Tsootsha area of Botswana’s Ghanzi District. Growing up connected to the Kgalagadi region helped shape his musical identity and appreciation for local traditions.

Although detailed information about his childhood, family, and education is not widely available, his music offers a glimpse into the cultural roots that inspire him. Rather than following mainstream musical trends alone, Chokoma has chosen to celebrate his language and heritage through his art.

Music Career and Rise to Fame

Chokoma’s musical journey began around 2016, when he started experimenting with beats and developing his sound. A major turning point came in 2019 after singer Charma Gal heard one of his songs and sought to connect with him.

Their collaboration on Ga ke a nyala helped introduce Chokoma to a wider audience and gave his career an important boost. He subsequently released albums including Nonyane tse pedi, Boela Gae, and Nchinoga.

Chokoma describes his style as Afro Culture, blending traditional influences, guitar sounds, and contemporary rhythms. His music aims to appeal to listeners of different ages while preserving the character of Shekgalagari.

One of his notable releases is Mother Tongue, a song that reflects his belief that musicians can succeed without abandoning their native languages.

Awards and Major Achievements

In 2024, Chokoma won Best Male Artist at the Botswana Musicians Union (BOMU) Awards. The recognition marked a significant milestone in his career.

In May 2025, he launched the Chokoma Toro Music Festival in Tlokweng, creating a platform to celebrate Botswana’s music and cultural heritage. He also released the six-track Toro EP around the event.
