Theo Botshelo Bome, popularly known as Hey Nyena, is a Motswana social media personality, master of ceremonies (MC), dancer, and entertainer. He became widely recognised in Botswana through his humorous TikTok videos and memorable catchphrases. His natural comic style and lively personality helped him turn online entertainment into a public career.

Early Life and Background

Born in 1992, Theo grew up in several Botswana villages, including Serowe, Moshupa, and Kanye. He has spoken openly about his childhood, describing himself as a mischievous young boy who enjoyed making people laugh. He was raised largely by his paternal grandmother, whom he credits with teaching him practical skills and encouraging him to work hard.

His grandmother has remained an important influence in his life. This relationship even inspired one of his recognizable catchphrases, “Ke apere jase ya ga Mmma,” which refers to wearing his grandmother’s coat. The phrase became part of his public image and helped make his content memorable.

Career and Rise to Fame

Before becoming a familiar face on social media, Theo explored several jobs to support himself and his daughter. He worked as a mechanic and took on other hands-on jobs. At the same time, he maintained his interest in the arts, participating in school drama and dancing.

He later worked as a dancer for Botswana music acts, including Team Distant and Chrispin The Drummer. These experiences gave him opportunities to develop his performance skills and become comfortable entertaining audiences.

Theo’s biggest breakthrough came during the COVID-19 lockdowns, when his TikTok videos attracted widespread attention. His online persona, Hey Nyenaaa, became known for its comic delivery and exaggerated storytelling. His growing popularity eventually opened doors for him as an MC and influencer.

Personal Life

Theo is a father to a daughter named Yamasa. In a 2022 interview with The Botswana Gazette, he spoke positively about maintaining a respectful co-parenting relationship with his daughter’s mother. He has also discussed the close bond he shares with his grandmother, who played a major role in his upbringing.
