Drizilik

Drizilik, whose real name is Benjamin Menelik George, is a popular Sierra Leonean rapper, singer, and songwriter known for blending traditional Sierra Leonean sounds with modern hip-hop and Afrobeats.

Born in April 1994 in Freetown, he has become one of the recognizable voices in the country’s contemporary music scene.

His music stands out because he combines catchy rhythms with Krio lyrics, cultural references, and stories about everyday life. Rather than simply following international trends, Drizilik has built a sound that celebrates his roots while appealing to listeners beyond Sierra Leone.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Drizilik grew up in Freetown in a Krio family. As a young boy, he developed a strong interest in music, listening to hip-hop and R&B artists while discovering his own creative style.

Drake was one of his early inspirations, particularly because of the Canadian artist’s ability to combine singing and rapping. Around 2011, Drizilik began recording freestyle performances with friends using basic computer software. What started as a hobby gradually developed into a serious musical ambition.

His stage name came from the nickname “Driz,” inspired by Drake, combined with his middle name, Menelik. This creative combination eventually became the name fans recognize today.

Music Career and Rise to Fame

Drizilik gained wider recognition with his breakthrough single “Pop Collar,” released in 2015. The song helped him attract attention in Freetown and opened doors for further performances and music releases.

In December 2018, he released his debut album, Shukubly. The project celebrated Sierra Leonean identity and helped establish his signature style, often described as Krio fusion. The album earned him four awards at the 2019 National Entertainment Awards, including Album of the Year, Male Artist of the Year, Best Afro Hip-Hop Artist, and Best Live Performer.

His international profile continued to grow through performances and collaborations, including work with British rapper Big Zuu. In 2021, he received an MTV Africa Music Awards nomination in the Listener’s Choice category. In March 2026, he led the Sierra Leone DJs Union National Music Awards nominations with seven nods, highlighting his continued relevance in local music.
