Keithroy “De Bear” Morson

Keithroy “De Bear” Morson is a celebrated calypsonian from Montserrat who has built an impressive reputation across the Eastern Caribbean. Known for his sharp lyrics, confident stage presence, and thought-provoking performances, he has become one of the region’s most accomplished calypso artists. Over several decades, he has won major titles in both Montserrat and Antigua and Barbuda, establishing himself as a powerful voice in Caribbean music.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Keithroy Morson was born on September 15, in Montserrat, where he developed an interest in music from an early age. His nickname, “Bear,” was given to him by a cousin when he was around five years old. When he began performing professionally, he added “De” to create the stage name De Bear.

His musical journey started with singing in a string band as a child. Growing up surrounded by Caribbean music gave him an early appreciation for the storytelling and social commentary that make calypso such an important part of the region’s cultural identity.

Morson has named several legendary calypsonians as influences, including Short Shirt, Swallow, Obstinate, David Rudder, and Singing Sandra. Their music helped shape his appreciation for lyrics that entertain audiences while addressing real-life issues.
