Zharnel Hughes

Zharnel Hughes is a British sprinter originally from Anguilla who has established himself as one of the fastest athletes in the world. Specializing in the 100 meters and 200 meters, he is known for his explosive starts, powerful running, and ability to compete against elite sprinters. His journey from a small Caribbean island to international athletics success is a story of determination, sacrifice, and ambition.

Early Life and Background

Zharnel Hughes was born on July 13, 1995, in The Valley, Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. Growing up on the island, he developed an interest in athletics at a young age. He often raced against family members, and his natural speed quickly became apparent.

Anguilla has limited athletics facilities compared with larger countries, but Hughes remained committed to developing his talent. At 16, he received an athletics scholarship that allowed him to move to Jamaica and train under renowned coach Glen Mills, who also coached sprinting legend Usain Bolt.

Training in Jamaica exposed Hughes to a highly competitive environment and helped him improve his technique, strength, and race strategy. In 2015, he began representing Great Britain in international senior competitions.

Athletics Career and Breakthrough

Hughes first attracted significant attention through his performances in junior competitions, where he won medals at regional and international championships. His progress continued at senior level, although injuries interrupted parts of his early career.

In 2018, he enjoyed a breakthrough season by winning European Championship gold in the 100 meters and the 4×100-metre relay. He also helped England win relay gold at the Commonwealth Games that year. Four years later, he won European Championship gold in the 200 meters and another Commonwealth relay title.

His biggest individual breakthrough came in 2023. Hughes ran 9.83 seconds in the 100 meters in New York, breaking the long-standing British record previously held by Linford Christie. A month later, he set another British record by running 19.73 seconds in the 200 meters in London.

Later that year, he won bronze in the 100 meters at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, earning his first individual medal at a senior global championship.

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Hughes helped Great Britain win bronze in the men’s 4×100-metre relay. He continued competing at the highest level and added further European and Commonwealth achievements in 2026.
